Workshop to Precision & Genomic Medicine

This introductory workshop on precision and genomics medicine will provide a basic understanding of the crucial role of a patient’s genetic make-up in the incidence and progression of cardiometabolic diseases. The ways in which genomics can be harnessed for the assessment of risk for diseases as well as enable the prioritization of optimal care for patients will be discussed.

The session will be divided in five parts:

  1. This introductory part will start with an quick recapitulation of what genetic variations are, how they are identified and catalogued and how the deep evolutionary history of our species has led to systematic genetic differences between individuals and populations.
  2. In the second part, the participants will be introduced to some of the major genomic databases and bioinformatics tools and provided hands-on experience of assessing genetic variations using basic genomic resources.
  3. In the third part we will review the current understanding of genetic underpinning of several cardiometabolic diseases. Demonstrations of how genetic data integrated with lifestyle and environmental factors can generate efficient risk models for various diseases will be presented. Examples of how these risk models are employed to stratify individuals (at the clinical level) and populations (at the public health level) will be discussed.
  4. In the next part, examples of how genomic data is becoming a valuable resource for identifying optimal drugs and dosage for patients.
  5. Finally, a second hands-on session will introduce the participants to some of these advanced resources for precision medicine.
