54th SEMDSA Congress

DATE: 26 - 28 March 2021

Welcome Invitation:

Dear SEMDSA Member,

In view of the ongoing second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and the prohibition of large social gatherings, the Organizing Committee has made a decision to host this year’s congress on a fully virtual platform.

This was a decision taken after much deliberation and review of the available data, and we believe it is in the best interests of all concerned.

The virtual conference platform we will be using is fully cloud-based and has the following features:

  • • An integrated mobile app for ease of access and attendee interaction
    • • Live support to assist participants with any challenges they may experience
      • • It differs significantly from webinars, which we have seen an abundance of during lockdown
        • • Fully-interactive sessions, plenary presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panel discussions, meetings hubs and exhibitions
          • • Live polls, surveys and Q&A chatbox, with the option of joining the presenters on the stage for a live discussion regarding the scientific content
            • • Speakers can share their presentations and other information for download
              • • The platform also allows you to take notes during every session which will be collated and emailed to you
                • • All presentations will be available on demand after the congress to watch at your convenience for 3 months

There are ample sponsorship opportunities available, including banner positions, virtual conference bags, video ads and graphics embedded in livestreams.

For exhibitors, there are virtual exhibitor opportunities with instant video meetings and chat features. As with a physical conference, time will be allocated in the programme for industry engagement.

One of the biggest benefits of a virtual conference is cost. We are keenly aware of the difficulties facing most individuals and companies during these tough economic times. Not only does an online conference eliminate the need to travel, but participation in the congress is cheaper for all sponsors, exhibitors and delegates.

A virtual conference will also allow us to reach a wider audience and improve our sustainability, meaning that we will be able to invite our colleagues from the rest of Africa and around the world to attend and earn their CPD points.

We encourage you to invite your colleagues from around the world to participate in the SEMDSA Congress.

The organising committee has also decided to extend the abstract submission deadline to 19 February 2021.

Those who have already submitted abstracts are welcome to edit their results on their current abstracts, or withdraw and resubmit a new abstract until this date.
